Historic harbor on the Tchefuncte |
Since it opened in 1984, Marina del Ray has become home port to some 300 plus sail and power boats. Seeing these majestic boats serenely moored, it's hard to imagine that the harbor was initially carved out of the east bank of the Tchefuncte River to accommodate World War I ships under construction at the shipyard on the opposite side many years ago. Marina del Ray's prize location on the Tchefuncte is just south of the Madisonville drawbridge and a short distance upriver from Lake Ponchartrain. Just think! While others are waiting on the drawbridge, Marina del Ray boaters are on the water, heading for the lake.
